About this game

About Checkers

English draughts on an eight-by-eight board. Men move diagonally forward and must jump when a capture is available. Reaching the far rank crowns a king that can move both ways. Play a friend in a two-seat room or the built-in opponent. The last player with a legal move wins.

How to play

How to play Checkers

Capture every computer piece, or leave it with no legal move.

Select one of your pieces, then select a dark square it can reach. If a jump is available you must take a capture. Multi-jumps continue with the same piece.

01

Select a piece

Move diagonally forward onto an empty dark square.

02

Take the jump

Jump an adjacent computer piece to capture it—captures are compulsory.

03

Crown a king

Reach the far row to crown a king, which can move backwards too.

Tips for Checkers

  • Keep a back-row piece at home to delay the opponent’s king.
  • A forced capture can be used to pull a piece off a strong square.
  • Kings belong in the center, not trapped on the edge.

Controls & accessibility
