Chess for four armies on a plus-shaped board. Each player has a standard set and a king. Turns rotate around the table. A player who is checkmated is out; their remaining pieces leave the board. Last king standing wins. A two-versus-two option sits teammates opposite each other. The room needs all four seats and does not start early. Board art is original.

How to play

How to play 4 Player Chess

Four armies share a plus-shaped board. Last king standing wins.

On your turn move one of your pieces with ordinary chess movement, adjusted so pawns walk away from your home edge. Checkmate removes that player. In team mode, checkmating either opponent can win the match for your pair.

Tips for 4 Player Chess

  • A piece hanging to two opponents is usually lost next turn.
  • Kings have more escape squares than in two-player chess — use them.
  • In free-for-all, letting two rivals fight can be stronger than taking a side.
